"Cecil Herring: Rediscovering Florida"
2005-09-02 until 2005-09-30
DeBary Hall
DeBary, FL, USA United States of America
Cecil Herring's art exhibition: "Rediscovering
Florida" opens Sept. 2 at DeBary Hall in DeBary, Florida.
The show features Herrings latest works of landscapes and florals,
scenes of Florida. Herring's selections are brilliantly colored
watercolors and digital media. DeBary Hall was the winter retreat
of a European-born wine merchant, Frederick deBary, who chose
the St. Johns River country for his hunting estate.
From Herring's Artist statement- "
'Find your bliss,' the great Philosopher- Anthropologist Joseph
Campbell advised. Campbell was right. I found my 'bliss' in 1956,
49 years ago. I have loved every minute I have spent creating
art works and to this day I still love my time spent painting
and sculpting. Time stops and I don't age!"
Cecil Herring has been a Premiere
Portfolio Artist since 2004. View more of her works at

Deltona painter
rediscovers Florida

When they go
on view at today's DeBary Hall opening reception, the paintings
in "Rediscovering Florida" will be close-up and personal.
That's partly because the works by Cecil Herring deal with the
state's natural subjects, from a view of Lake Osceola to orchids
and the old cabbage palm growing by the side of the road. But
it's also because of the Deltona artist's very direct approach.
"Last
year, I started rediscovering my own Florida, so to speak,"
said Herring, a native of Miami, who has lived in Central Florida
for decades.
"And,
in the spring, I got carried away with the colors. It seemed as
if the amaryllises bloomed all at once and my tabebuia tree was
so gorgeous that I just went out with my paints and a palette
knife and painted it on the spot," she said.
That started
the series of outdoor, or "plein air," paintings that
are featured in her solo exhibit. Not only do its 12 paintings
- 11 oil-on-canvas and one the new study of the hot-pink cyclamen
that sparked her creativity - capture the essence of what inspired
Herring.
They also embody
the whole experience of painting in the open air. "These
show all the beauty - and the time and trouble," she said,
laughing. "The sun, wind, bugs that caused me a lot of exhaustion.
One day on the St. Johns River, I saw a great Florida cabbage
palm.
"The wind
was blowing, so I did it as fast as possible, with the largest
tools possible - trowels and big tubes of paint that I squeezed
right on the canvas," said Herring. "I finally tied
my canvas to the back of my van and slathered on the color. Sometimes
I even scratched into the surface to get details. It was a nightmare,
but it was so much better than painting from photographs - I could
really show how it felt to be there.
"Even
back in the '60s, when I was a student at the University of Florida,
I could not stand it unless I went out in the field to work -
I loved being in those rolling hills," she said. "I
saw Florida as a magic fairyland, and I got that kind of feeling
again last year. It's all there, in the thick paints on the canvas:
a magic fairyland."

Multimedia
artist Cecil Herring exhibited 5 of her digital fine art works
in the Cologne, Germany, Art Fair Oct. 28 to Nov. 1, 04 as part
of an international extravaganza of painting, sculpture, installation,
graphics and video by artists from Japan, Australia, USA and Europe.
Cecil's works were electronically beamed on a huge brick wall
called a "CyberWall" for an installation called "Electronic
ENERGY," designed by Erich Fritz, of Cologne as a "highlight'
of the show being held in a converted industrial complex called
Cologne Palladium.
Digital art is a wonderful way for artists to show their works
globally.
