New work, painted April 2010

St. John's River provides a constant source of painting inspiration for me. I go by it frequently and set up my easel. I find I can take all kinds of liberties like here when I saw a red reflexion. I just exaggerated the red a bit creating my statement for earth day, April 22, 2010. I sometimes see visions when I paint. I hope this is not a vision of the future condition of this gorgeous river. Right now, several counties are pumping water out of it to sell commercially! I cannot believe counties would have shortsightedness. I just hope we aren't all thirsty someday as a consequence of Floridas
wasteful watering practices. Now that I have lectured I'll tell you about my colorful painting. It is oil on canvas and gallery wrapped, with the colors continuing around the sides. It is an exciting work, yet in a way a tranquil painting and very colorful. I used a huge trowel so the oil is thick and textured.

River's Edge

There are inlets, outlets and a sea of grass along the St. John's River. You can get lost there! One time our boat motor broke down and it took almost all night getting back. It was pitch black and there are alligators. I was scared!

In the Garden

My friend, the late Millie Whigham gave me a lot of Amaryllis bulbs. I planted them and the next year, I had over one dozen big red lilies blooming by my front door. I set up a stool and an easel and painted them. It was a very windy day so I had to hold the canvas with one hand and paint with the other one. Lovely Millie's great spirit lives on.
