Statement

I am becoming a Florida Highway Woman! Have you ever noticed the best scenes are along the interstate where there are no places to park and get out and take pictures? Every day, I notice more of those lovely vistas are being mowed down, bulldozed for a coming subdivision! Often I longed for shots of that far Florida vista or lovely glade ALONG THE CROWDED SUPERHIGHWAY with NO side roads!
I got so desperate to capture the lovely scenes I enlisted my 2 daughters to DRIVE me around while I lean out the passenger window and snap dozens of digital photos.
"Slow down, this is good," I say. My daughters love it because they can tell me about a particular place they have noticed. Nowadays, they'll say, "Oh Mom, you have to see by the river now. The flowers are blooming all over it. We've got to go over there!"
After a trip, I will come home and download the batch. Some are awful - crooked, all sky or ground. Some have cars in them, some are all road or have a piece of my rear view mirror in them. I make necessary corrections, kick up the colors, make glossy prints and start painting!
Sometimes I am lucky enough to find a place to paint away from the highway. I grab my ever ready painting gear, set up and paint fast before the rain, bugs, clouds or wind get to me.

River's Edge

There are inlets, outlets and a sea of grass along the St. John's River. You can get lost there! One time our boat motor broke down and it took almost all night getting back. It was pitch black and there are alligators. I was scared!

This painting is from a photo taken from the bridge looking south over the St. John's River Basin along Highway 46, east of Geneva, FL My son in law drove me while I took rapid fire photos of the entire St. John's river basin.

DeBary Field

The lowly scraggly cabbage palm is a fact of life here in Florida. They are everywhere and seemingly indestructible!
I really took artistic liberties here!

A Bird Flew By

I spent the day on the St. John's River on a pontoon boat with some of my old high school friends. It was lovely and lush along the river with wild birds flying among flowering trees. We saw dozens of huge alligators lying everywhere on the banks. This heron took off across the water as we slowly floated by.

Beach Birds

This man made an interesting study! He was very popular with the birds and pretty courageous too. It was amazing to see all the birds he could hold and feed at one time.

I am a Florida native. All my life I have loved the beach. This painting reminds me of when I was little, building sand castles! at Miami Beach.

Lake Grass

For Sanford residents, Lake Monroe has become the center of life with a river walk, wonderful gazebos, swings and flower gardens.

Best View

St. John's River headwaters are west of Melbourne. First just a trickle, collecting swamp waters, creating lakes, it becomes a mighty river flowing north 310 miles to Jacksonville. This is a view from Highway 46 east of Sanford.

Sea of Grass

I painted this work the same day I painted Cabbage Palm on the St. John's. It was a very windy day so I put my canvas on the tail gate of my van and painted it flat. The view looks west by Highway 415 across a sea of grass to I-4 (far right at the horizon).

Cabbage Palm by St. John's River

I painted this work sitting near the river on an old relief bridge. It was a very windy day. I tied my easel to a road barricade and painted fast. When I stepped back to look, a gust blew my palette 10 feet away, upside down, leaving big globs of paint on the ground. oil on canvas 22 x 28

Tababuia Tree

This is one of my favorite paintings. My son in law planted the 3 foot sapling on my front lawn 9 years ago. For years it didn't seem to grow despite all my care, feeding and talk. In 2004 it finally bloomed and gave a bit of shade too. So I sat under it and painted it and complimented it for giving me lots of gorgeous buttercup like flowers. oil on canvas,

In the Garden

A family friend gave me a lot of Amaryllis bulbs. I planted them and the next year, I had over one dozen big red lilies blooming by my front door. I set up a stool and an easel and painted them. It was a very windy day so I had to hold the canvas with one hand and paint with the other one.

Cyclamen

My friend Karen said she loved my floral paintings. I immediately went over to Lowe's, bought 3 pots of lovely hot pink flowers, set them up in my studio and painted them - all in 3 hours. I was inspired by my friend's comment! Oil on canvas
