History of Spacescapes©

Artist Cecil Herring named her 'style' Spacescapes© in 1971

for her first New York show at Center Gallery, 49 W. 57th St. in Manhattan. "My collector/representative Sydney Hyman arranged the show and set up the date with the Director. I worked all year welding armatures, getting familiar with the huge generator and Binks spray equipment, blowing polyvinyl chloride to create the spacey forms. Later, I painted the forms with bright enamels that glowed in ultraviolet light called DayGlo. Everybody was entranced with them. I immediately got offers for shows including a show in New York when I made my first sale to collector Sydney Hyman. "We have to get you off the streets!" said Sydney as I stood nodding in agreement as I stood on 5th Ave. in Greenwich Village. I had just set up my new PVC exhibit having gotten my space assigned at the show office! I heard yelling. "Oh my gosh" the man hollered as he ran across 5th Ave.

It was Sidney Hyman, my first collector of my new Spacescapes sculpture. (see photo of first show.)

Sidney was wonderful! I can still feel his enthusium. It was obvious he loved 'modern art'. I met him in Palm Beach Mall in 1970 where I showed my new collection for the first time. He was amazing and immediately bought Menagerie, a far out plastic piece on plexiglass base.Now I wish I had spent more time with him but I lived in Melbourne, FL and he lived someplace in New York. I guess it was fate we met several times and resorted to longhand correspondence. I may have several letters someplace in a dusty box. After he set up my show at Center Gallery 49 West 57 st. I had a lot of exposure as New Yorkers saw my futuristic works as they walked by the big front windows at 49 West 57th street. Several really famous artists were showing at that time, including the really great sculptor - Alexander Calder whose soaring air bourne 'mobiles' dominated the soaring Guggenheim museum.

"Wow, your work belongs in the Guggenheim!" declared one of my first gallery visitors."

"What drugs did you use?" a young man asked. These were the first comments I heard after I got situated in Center Gallery Oct. 1971 after I worked a year to get the show delivered and installed. Sidney made the offer and he and Mrs. Evelyn Marks arranged for my show.

"Pack up everything and take these uptown to Mrs. Mark's Gallery and set up a show date!" Sidney took a chance on me!

She used Kodak film, processing and technical help from a camera store in Melbourne, FL. All photographs were taken by Cecil Herring and are under copyright and may not be used in any way.

Spacescapes History: I first used my original name Spacescapes© when I made it up for my Spacescapes© New York show in Oct. 1971. Evelyn Marks, the director of the Manhattan Gallery at 49 W. 57th St. asked me what I called my strange looking sculptures. I told her "Landscapes in Space, umm, "Spacescapes." I've used the name ever since - next year will be 40 years.
